Rugby in the ithaca area has a rich history. Throughout the last 15 years rugby programs have flourished at both Cornell, Cortland, Binghamton University, Ithaca College and Ithaca High School. Moreover, Ithaca has been home to the Central Women's Sevens team for nearly 15 years.

Ithaca women's senior-side rugby began in 1994 and participated in tournaments and local matches until team leadership left the area in 2002. The Ithaca Iguanadons were a diverse group of women, many with ties to both Cornell and the surrounding communities.

Central women's sevens has provided the Ithaca area a consistent opportunity for summer rugby. Capturing the Empire Games gold medal in sevens rugby numerous times, the team consisted of ruggers from all areas in Central NY, including Syracuse, Binghamton, Cortland and many rural areas.

In 2009, several former Cornell ruggers and area residents met to discuss expanding the opportunities for rugby in the Southern Tier. With a strong group of dedicated women (and a very understanding husband), Ithaca Women's rugby was well on its way. In the spring of 2010 the team adopted the nickname "Avengers" after several rounds of team voting and many suggestions. The logo was designed by Emily Benning (Prop).

The Fall of 2010 saw the Avengers roster rise to 38 dues paying members. The previous summer to program was able to field two full 7s sides each tournament weekend. In a very short period of time, Ithaca Women's rugby has become one of the largest senior side programs in Upstate NY.
